1. It’s a small world. (用于意外遇见某人或发现对方也认识某人时表示惊讶的场合)世界真小。
2. That’s life. (表示失望而无可奈何)这就是生活,生活就是这样的。常用于安慰那些生活不如意又想不通并抱消极态度的人,可译为“生活嘛,就是这样,难免发生这样那样的事。”也可以说Such is life.例如: It’s a shame I can’t go on the trip to France, but that’s life.真遗憾我去不了法国了,但这就是生活。
3. a piece of cake (表示某事较容易做) 小菜一碟,不成问题。 Our homework last night was a piece of cake.
4. Be my guest. (同意别人的请求)请别客气;请随便好啦!常用于回答May I ...?或Can I ...?这类表示请求的问句。 —Do you mind if I use the phone? —Be my guest. 我可以用一下电话吗?请便。
5. As it comes, please. (没有特别要求) 随便,谢谢。例如: —How would you like your tea? —As it comes, please. ——你的茶要怎么沏? ——随便,谢谢。
6. go Dutch各自付帐;平摊费用 She was surprised when he suggested they go Dutch. 当他建议各付各的帐时,她很吃惊。 They decided to go Dutch. 他们决定各自付帐。
7. My treat. 我请客。 Let’s go out for lunch—my treat. 咱们到外面去吃午餐——我请客。

19. I should (not) think so. (表示没有把握)我觉得(不)是这样吧! —Is this enough for everyone? 这些东西够所有人吃吗? —I should think so. 我觉得够了吧。 Will it matter? 这有关系吗? I shouldn’t think so. 不会吧?
20. anything but根本不,绝不是 He is anything but clever. 他根本不聪明。
21. You can count on it. 你尽管相信好了;尽管放心。 —Do you think he will come to my birthday party? —You can count on it.
22. at your service 尽管吩咐!随时为您效劳! If you need anything, I’m at your service. 如果您需要什么,尽管吩咐。
23. That isn’t due yet. 那还未到期。 —Did you remember to pay the telephone bill? —The telephone bill? That isn’t due yet.
24. How would you like your coffee/money? 您喝什么样的咖啡?您要什么样的钱? —How would you like your money? —In pounds —How would you like your coffee? —Black.
25. After you! 您先请! 如果你是一位先生,那么你一定要学会毕恭毕敬地说这句“After you!”它是一句形式上很简单的礼貌用语,相当于汉语的“您先请!
26. Please yourself!(表示恼怒或不关心) 悉听尊便,随你的便。 —I don’t think I’ll bother finishing this. —Please yourself! ——我想我不必费心做完这件事。 ——随你的便。
27. Got it.(I’ve got it.)我明白了。 —Remember to take the medicine three times a day. —Got it.
28. I wasn’t born yesterday. 我不是三岁小孩。 Don’t cheat me. I wasn’t born yesterday.
29. Let’s call it a day. 我们今天就做到这儿吧。 —OK, you’ll review the content of today and prepare the content of next class. Let’s call it a day. See you. —See you, Mr John.
30. I just couldn’t help it.我就是忍不住。 At the bad news I cried and cried. I just couldn’t help it.
31. I never liked it anyway.我一直不太喜欢这东西。 当朋友或同事不小心摔坏你的东西时,你就可以用上面这句话给他一个台阶,以打破尴尬局面。 Oh, don’t worry. I’m thinking of buying a new one. I never liked it anyway.

36. Don’t get me wrong. 请别误解我。 Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not criticizing you.
37. I’m not kidding. = I mean it. = I’m serious. 我是当真的。
38. Your face tells it all. 看你的脸色就知道了。(你的表情透露了一切。)
39. Not so (too) bad. 不错,比预料的好。 —How are you? —Not too bad That wasn’t too bad at the first attempt. 你第一次尝试还算不错。
40. You’re going too far!(你太过份了!)
41. I couldn’t care less.这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”,也就是: I couldn’t care at all. 例如: —How do you like Mr. Liu’s political point of view? 你喜欢刘先生的政见吗? —I couldn’t care less. 我才不在乎呢!
42. I couldn’t agree more. 我非常同意。 —Let’s go out for a change, shall we? —I couldn’t agree more.
43. That’s it. 常用于表示对方说得没错、合理的场合,意为“对啦”。例如: —What’s six plus seven? —Thirteen. A: That’s it. ——6加7等于几? ——13。 ——对啦。
44. So what? (认为无关紧要,尤其是用于反驳他人的指责)那又怎样?那又怎么啦? —He is fifteen years younger than you. —So what? So what if nobody else agrees with me? 就算没有一个人赞成我的意见那又怎样?
45. Think nothing of it. = That’s all right. / Don’t mention it. (回答感谢或道歉)不用谢;没关系。 —It was really kind of you to do this for me. —Think nothing of it. It was my pleasure. |
