A recent study offers a picture of how dangerous it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal(致命的) accident as a teenager driving alone. However, the possibility of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.
It was also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late night accident.
Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to help solve the problem is to have states setting up so-called graduated licensing systems(等级执照制). A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself able to drive in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with a limited number of passengers, before graduating to full driving on his own. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place. The systems have reduced teenage driver crashes(相撞), according to recent studies.
56.Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?
A. Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p.m.
B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.
C. Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.
D. A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.
57.According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to____.
A. their frequent driving at night B. their improper way of driving
C. their lack of driving experienceD. their driving with passengers
58.A suggested measure to be taken to reduce teenagers' driving accidents is that___.
A. driving in the presence of an adult should be made a rule
B. they should be stopped from taking on passengers
C. they should not be allowed to drive after 10 p.m.
D. the licensing system should be improved
59.The present situation in about half of the states is that the graduated licensing system __________.
A. is under discussion B. is about to be set up
C. has been put into effect D. has been perfected

Many of us believe that a person's mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr Jarvik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of identical twins(双胞胎), who were first examined when they were already 60 years old.As Dr Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline(衰弱) as was expected.
However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor speed. This means that it took them longer to finish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr Jarvik's studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only with those in their 30s and 40s, but with those in their 60s and 70s as well.
It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call “ loss of memory” is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at too fast a speed. In the cases where the older person's mind really seems to get worse, it is not necessarily a sign of decline due to old age. Often it is simply a sign of a sad emotional state.
60.This passage is mainly about __________.
A. how Dr Jarvik studied mental functioning of the twins
B. what caused mental decline
C. the results evidenced (proved) by Dr Jarvik's studies
D. the difference between middle-aged and older persons
61.The word “psychiatry” in paragraph 1 most probably means ___________.

B. the study of disease of the mind
C. the study of problems caused by aging persons
D. the study of twin's growth
62.A long-term study of 136 pairs of twins showed that _____________.
A. they lost a little ability to reason over the years
B. the only factor which declined over the years was their speed with which to perform mental tasks
C. their memory was not as good as it had once been
D. their minds became a bit more active as they grew older
63.What we call mental decline is usually a sign of _____________.
A. a low-spirited state B. a worsening state of health
C. old age D. nervous tension

Who are the most beautiful women in the world? Looking at the records, people might think Venezuelan women are. They win the Miss Latin America, Miss Universe, and Miss World contests more frequently than women from any other country. In Venezuela, the term “Miss” as in “Miss Universe” is an honored title.
These days, people in some cultures consider beauty contests to be silly. They have tried to stop these contests, saying the contests treat women as objects and place too much importance on women's looks. But in Latin America, beauty contests are a source of pride.
Are Venezuelan women really more beautiful than other women? “They are not really more beautiful here,” says Selena, who trains girls for the contest. “It's just that the girls here work harder and prepare more than anyone else.”
The preparation takes many hours a day. The contestants stretch their bodies and practice their walks down the runway. They work on their speeches and practice answering questions such as, “Whom do you admire most in the world?” They starve to stay slim. They take classes to learn how to style their hair and apply make-up.
It isn't easy. One Miss Universe winner immediately put on 20 pounds after the contest. She said the only thing she wanted to do after the contest was to eat. The cost is high as well. Fortunately the television station that holds the contest pays the costs.
Yet most of the contestants say it's worth the effort. A former Miss Universe is now mayor of a district in a large city. Although she had no political experience before that, she has been asked to run for higher political office. Another winner has her own television show. Winners have an advantage they could not get anywhere else. “It's the only chance you have to make it,” says one contestant. “You can't get these opportunities any other way.”
64.The passage is mainly about ________.
A. beauty contests around the world
B. different opinions on beauty contests
C. why Venezuelan women are more successful in beauty contests
D. the training of beauty contestants
65.According to Selena, the reason why Venezuelan women win more beauty contests is that ________.
A. they are more beautiful B. they are better educated
C. they are better preparedD. they get more support
66.When the Venezuelan contestants say “it's worth the effort”, they really mean___.
A. they gain more fame from beauty contests
B. the money spent on beauty contests is worthwhile
C. they gain an advantage over anyone else in politics
D. beauty contests lead to a better career
D
Container gardening is especially adapted to present living. Plants in containers show great variety of form and texture(外观). They can be used to create instant indoor gardens; they can be moved from one home to another; and they can be moved outdoors in the summer and indoors during the cooler months.
Space is not a problem. Container gardening can be conducted in a single pot on a table or window sill, in a more elaborate room divider, or in a built-in planter.
Just as there are many kinds of plants, there are many kinds of containers. Plants can be grown in any container that will hold a growing medium. The choice ranges from the common clay pot to cans, jars, boxes, baskets and tubs.
Most people select containers for both their practical and “esthetic qualities”. These include cost, availability, weight, strength, durability, attractiveness and sentimental value.
The size and shape of the container should depend on the plant's size and shape. Tall, tapering plants are more attractive in tall, relatively narrow containers; short, compact plants appear more at home in shallow, wide containers.
Particularly important considerations for good plant growth are the volume and depth of the container, and some provision for drainage. Containers that have drainage holes in the bottom for the removal of excess water are best. Water-tight containers are difficult to manage—excess water will accumulate at the bottom of the container and injure plant roots by excluding oxygen.
Container volume and depth become important in relation to the quantity of available water and nutrients.
Besides the right kind of container, some basic requirements for plant growth must be provided. Plants need light, water nutrients, and a satisfactory temperature ranges.
Light is the most critical requirement. The levels of all the other requirements are regulated in relation to the amount of light that plants receive. When plants don't have enough light they become tall and thin. Plants are easier to maintain in good condition when their light requirements are met.
67.This article is primarily about ________________.
A. growing indoor plants
B. growing tropical plants
C. making containers for plants
D. choosing appropriate containers for indoor plants
68.The expression “esthetic qualities” might have something to do with the ____ of the containers.
A. size and shape
B. drainage and light
C. attractiveness and decorative value
D. availability only
69.It is believed that plants needs ______________.
A. extra water B. enough warmth
C. more nutrient D. more sunlight
70.The author implies that ___________________.
A. plants in containers have more varieties of form
B. plants can be damaged if they are given too much water
C. most plants should be placed on the fire stoves during winter months
D. some plants are particularly fit for container gardening
71.According to the passage, it is true that ___________________.
A. vegetables are easier to grow than flowering plants
B. the growth of indoor plants can be adjusted by adequate light and temperature
C. most indoor plants live from three to five years.
D. plants growing indoors need little care

Defenders of special protective labor law for women often say that getting rid of such laws would destroy the fruits of a century-long struggle for the protection of women workers. Even a brief examination of the historic practice of courts and employers would show that the fruits of such laws have been bitter: they are, in practice, more of a misfortune than a blessing.
Sex-defined (依据性别确定的) protective laws have often been based on common beliefs concerning women's needs and abilities and employers have frequently used them as legal excuses for looking down upon women. After the Second World War, for example, businesses and governments tried to persuade women to give up jobs in factories, thus making room in the labor force for returning soldiers. The passage of state laws limiting the daily or weekly work hours of women conveniently completed this. Employers had only to declare that overtime hours were a necessary condition of employment in their factory, and women could be quite legally fired, refused jobs, or kept at low wage levels, all in the name of “protecting” their health. By proving such laws when they are questioned by lawsuits, the courts have cheated people over the years in setting up different, less advantageous employment terms for women than for men, thus reducing women's competitiveness on the job market. At the same time even the most good-hearted lawmakers, courts, and employers have often been blind to the real needs of women. The lawmakers and the courts continue to permit employers to offer employees health insurance plans that cover all known human medical disabilities except those related to childbirth.
Finally, labor laws protecting only special groups are often ineffective at protecting the workers who are actually in the workplace. Some chemicals, for example, have reproductive risks for women of childbearing years; factory owners using the chemicals keep laws protecting women against these dangers by refusing to hire them. Thus the sex-defined law protects the supposed female workers, but has no effect whatever on the safety of any actual employees. The health risks to male employees in such industries cannot be too slight. Protective laws aimed at changing production materials or techniques in order to reduce such dangers would benefit all employees without discriminating against any.
On the whole, protective labor laws for women are unfair and do not meet their intended purpose. Lawmakers should recognize that women are in the work force to stay and that their needs --- good health care, an acceptable wage, and a safe workplace --- are the needs of all workers. Laws that take no notice of these facts act against women's rights for equal protection in employment.
72.According to the writer, which of the following resulted from the passage of statelaws limiting the work hours of women workers?
A. Women workers had to leave their jobs in factories.
B. Many employers had difficulty in providing jobs for returning soldiers.
C. Many employers found it hard to attract women workers.
D. The health of most women factory workers improved.
73.The passage suggests that which of the following is a shortcoming of protective labor laws that single out a particular group of workers for protection?
A. Such laws are often too weak to be effective at protecting the group in question.
B. Such laws are usually made by those who do not have the best interest of workers at heart.
C. Such laws have no pressure on employers to get rid of dangers in the workplace.
D. Keeping such laws is often expensive for employers and makes the other workers angry.
74.According to the first paragraph of the passage, the writer considers which of the following to be most helpful in determining the value of special protective labor law for women?
A. A study of patterns of work-related illnesses in states that had such laws and in states that did not.
B. A review of how many women workers are in favor of such laws.
C. A study of the cost to employers keeping such laws.
D. An examination of the actual effects that such laws have had in the past on women workers.
75.The main point of the passage is that special protective labor laws for women workers are ____.
A. unnecessary because most workers are well protected by existing labor laws
B. harmful to the economic interests of women workers while offering them little or no actual protection
C. not worth keeping even though they do stand for a hard-won result of the labor movement
D. unfair because male workers receive less protection than they require
